The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health tackles all issues related to the environment to create and maintain ecological conditions that will promote health and prevent diseases. This is carried out through the 8 major components as below. The department is a highly specialized multi-disciplinary department headed by a Director in charge and assisted by other key personnel. Amongst other things, the department:

  1. Conducts occupational health surveillance of companies, industries, work places, schools etc.
  2. Conducts health education and awareness campaigns on protecting workers health against occupational hazards such as occupational accidents, injuries, occupational diseases and occupationally related diseases for different population groups in the state.
  3. Promotes safe injection practices among health workers.
  4. Manage medical wastes in public and private health institutions in the state.
  5. Develops, plans and organizes capacity building programmes on health for health professionals including health promotion programmes.
  6. Manages an established data bank for notifiable occupational diseases
  7. Conducts research in relevant areas of occupational health.

Components of Environmental Health

Principally there are eight (8) components as follows:-

  1. Water-provision of safe and adequate supply of water
  2. Solid waste management
  3. Sewage management
  4. Food hygiene and market sanitation
  5. Housing and building sanitation
  6. Vector control
  7. Air pollution
  8. Other hazards such as noise, radiation, biodiversity etc.

The Department has 5 units namely

(1)      Food hygiene and sanitation unit

(2)      Building sanitation unit

(3)      Water sanitation unit

(4)      Vector and Pest control services unit

(5)      Occupational health and safety unit


  1. To conduct food surveillance for the protection and maintenance of community health in the state.
  2. To carry out milk hygiene and ensure pasteurization of milk and milk products in the state.
  3. To conduct inspection of meat, fish, fruits and vegetables, drinks, beverages, fruit juice etc. whether in the raw or processed form in the state.
  4. To carry out market sanitation in the state
  5. To certify and register hotels, restaurants, bakeries, food vendors, other items considered as prepared food, eating places, etc. annually and to conduct periodic inspection of such places to ensure high sanitary standards in the state.
  6. To carry out six monthly medical examination of all food handlers including butchers and meat sellers in the state.
  7. To conduct periodic health education of food handlers in matters of personal hygiene, food handling, food transportation utensils, dish washing, insect and rodent control, etc. in the state.
  8. To liaise with the relevant departments to investigate out-break of food poisoning in the state.
  9. Prosecution of offenders in the state in the relevant law courts.
  1. Inspection of new building sites in the state to ensure that the new building does not constitute any form of hazard.
  2. Approval of building plans in the state.
  3. House-to house inspection to ensure that the basic sanitary conditions are met in the state.
  4. Inspection of regulated premises, companies, etc. in the state
  5. Supervision of ongoing building constructions in the state to ensure that approved plans are complied with.
  6. Ensuring that completed buildings in the state are used solely for the purpose they are built for i.e. not converting approved residential premise to commercial purpose
  7. Certification of completed buildings in the state for human habitation and use.
  8. Prosecution of offenders in the relevant law courts.
  1. Certification and registration of water manufacturing plants, bore-holes etc. meant for public consumption in the state.
  2. Health education for public water providers and vendors in the state
  3. Prosecution of offenders in the relevant law courts.
  1. Certification and registration of vector and pest control establishments in the state.
  2. To conduct health education on safety and hazards for spray men in the state.
  3. Fumigation of governmental establishments as well as residential houses in the state.
  4. Periodic medical examinations of spray men.
  5. Prosecution of offenders in the state in the relevant law courts
  6. Supervision of activities of vector/pest control establishments.
